God's Hornets

I will send the hornet before you to drive the Hivites and Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. — Exod 23:28 BSB

What the hornets were, we need not fully understand. They were God's chosen instruments, sent ahead of His people to sting their enemies and make Israel’s conquest easier. Our God will fight for His people using His own methods, often confounding the adversaries of truth in ways that reformers themselves could never anticipate. The world is full of mysterious forces that harass Israel's foes. We read in Revelation that "the earth helped the woman."

Let us never be afraid. The stars in their courses fight against the enemies of our souls. Often, when we march to battle, we find no enemy to fight. "The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace." God’s hornets can achieve more than our weapons ever could. We could never imagine the victory being won by the means Jehovah chooses. We must obey our marching orders and go forth to conquer the nations for Jesus, and we will find that the Lord has gone before us and prepared the way. In the end, we will joyfully confess, "His own right hand and His holy arm have gotten Him the victory."
