Here I am. Bear witness against me before the LORD and before His anointed: Whose ox or donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated or oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe and closed my eyes? Tell me, and I will restore it to you.” “You have not wronged us or oppressed us,” they replied, “nor have you taken anything from the hand of man.” — 1 Sam 12:3-4 BSB
It is a powerful testimony to the purity and nobility of a person’s life when, in old age, no one can speak a word of complaint against them. This is especially remarkable when that person has lived in the public eye, entrusted with sacred responsibilities. Jesus lived such a life—His enemies searched for any fault, but they could find none.
Our goal should be to live in such a way that, when we reach the end of our days, no one can accuse us of wrongdoing. It is a great joy to hear others say, “You have always treated us with kindness. You have been a source of comfort, help, and encouragement.”
To have this kind of testimony at the end, we must begin early and continue living upright, helpful lives without faltering. Only then can we leave behind a legacy of love and service.
