How precious is Your loving devotion, O God, that the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings! — Ps 36:7 BSB
“He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.” (Psalm 91:4)
There is no better place to run for shelter than under God’s wings when the world is cold and harsh. It’s a warm, safe place to rest when our hearts are overwhelmed with sorrow. It is often in times of trouble that we find the softest comfort under God’s wings.
We sometimes talk about sorrow as a shadow that falls over us, growing darker until it seems all light is gone. But have you ever considered that this shadow is cast by the wings of God? What feels like a dark cloud of unkindness is, in reality, the shadow of His loving wings protecting us. God is never closer to us than when we are in our deepest sorrow.
Just like a mother holds her suffering child closer, God draws us near in our pain. When we are at our weakest, weighed down by sin or distress, that’s when His love and patience hold us the tightest.
