On the Lord’s day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, — Rev 1:10 BSB

We should all seek to be in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day. During the week, we are occupied with our business, and our hands are full of tasks that must be done. The world has a way of getting into our hearts during these busy days, and if there is no pause in this secular life, we can easily become secular in spirit, losing our interest in spiritual things. The problem isn’t that we are in the world, but that the world so often gets into us. It’s perfectly fine for a ship to be in the sea, but when the sea gets into the ship, it sinks! Christ wants us to be in the world, but He doesn’t want the world to get into us.

On the Lord’s Day, we should aim to steer our ship completely out of the world’s troubled waters and into the peaceful harbor of spiritual rest and joy. We should focus on spiritual things and ask God to cleanse our hearts of worldliness and fill them with His presence. A person who faithfully uses the Lord’s Day each week will be strengthened against the unspiritual influences of the world. A well-spent Sunday will sustain the spiritual tone of life, even amid the busiest pressures of the week. There is no other antidote to worldliness, and no Christian who desires to be faithful can afford to lose the Sundays out of their week.

“I am not praying that You take them out of the world–but that You protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” (John 17:15-16)

“You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God!” (James 4:4)

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 John 2:15)
