The jar of flour was not exhausted and the jug of oil did not run dry, according to the word that the LORD had spoken through Elijah. — 1 Kgs 17:16 BSB
There was always just enough flour and oil—never more, but never less. Every day’s portion was taken, and yet the next day, there was still enough. They never had a month’s supply, or even two days’ worth in advance. The provision came only as it was needed, teaching them daily reliance on God. But the supply never failed.
This teaches us that God wants us to live one day at a time. Jesus emphasized this in His prayer: “Give us this day our daily bread.” We are to ask only for what we need today. God doesn’t promise us provisions in advance. If we have what we need for today and are faithfully doing our part, we can trust Him to provide for tomorrow when it comes. And He will, because God’s promises never fail.
It’s important to settle this truth in our hearts as we start the year. Each day will come with its own “basket,” holding just what we need for that day—no more, no less.
