And the angel of God, who had gone before the camp of Israel, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from before them and stood behind them, — Exod 14:19 BSB
The angel of the Lord appeared to the Israelites in the form of a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. This guidance from God was miraculous. By day, the cloud sheltered them from the heat; by night, the same cloud provided light. The cloud was not only a shelter and a light, but also a guide. When it lifted, the people knew it was time to move. When it settled, they knew it was time to rest.
Though we do not have a visible cloud or pillar of fire to guide us today, God’s presence is just as real. He leads us through His Word, through His providence, and by His Spirit. If we are willing to follow without questioning, we will never remain in confusion for long. God’s guidance is given step by step, as we are willing to accept and follow it.
The guidance God gives is not like a road map, showing us the entire journey all at once. It is given one step at a time, and we must trust Him as we take each step forward.
