And there in the desert they all grumbled against Moses and Aaron. — Exod 16:2 BSB

As soon as the Israelites were away from visible means of sustenance, they lost heart. It’s strange to think how quickly they forgot all of God’s past deliverances.

But are we really any different? We sing joyfully when life is going well, but when troubles or needs arise, our joy fades, and we begin to murmur. There’s still a lot of complaining when we have to leave our pleasant "Elims" and journey through wilderness experiences. How much happier we would be if we learned to walk by faith, not by sight! A promise from God is far better security for life’s needs than any amount of food or money. Nothing in this world is as real as the invisible things of God’s love. If we are His children, we can trust Him fully, no matter how desolate the desert before us may appear.
