Mordecai also gave Hathach a copy of the written decree issued in Susa for the destruction of the Jews, to show and explain to Esther, urging her to approach the king, implore his favor, and plead before him for her people. So Hathach went back and relayed Mordecai’s response to Esther. Then Esther spoke to Hathach and instructed him to tell Mordecai, — Esth 4:8-10 BSB

In Scripture, we often overlook the minor characters in our focus on the more prominent figures. Yet these lesser-known people are often just as important, and their roles are just as vital to the success of the story.

The little servant girl in the story of Naaman the leper may be overshadowed by the splendor of the Syrian court, but without her role, the story would not exist.

The young boy with the loaves and fishes may be hardly noticed in the account of Jesus feeding the five thousand, but it was his small contribution that became the foundation for the miracle.

Small links in a chain are often just as important as the larger ones.

Hathach, the faithful messenger in the story of Esther, is one of these obscure figures. Yet without him, communication between Mordecai and Esther would have been impossible. If we can’t perform great deeds like Esther or offer wise counsel like Mordecai, we can still serve faithfully like Hathach. Our seemingly small contributions may one day prove just as essential to God’s work as the more visible deeds of others.
