Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. — Ps 119:105 BSB

Oh, what a transformation takes place in the soul’s attitude toward the Word of God when the Lord quickens it into divine life! It’s no wonder that such a dramatic change occurs, for it’s by the power of God’s Word that this wondrous transformation happens. As James 1:18 says, “Of his own will he begat us with the word of truth.” Other books may educate or entertain us; they can stimulate the intellect, captivate the imagination, or refine the mind. But what more can they do? I don’t mean to belittle other books, for without them, society as we know it wouldn’t exist, and reverting to a time where books were burned would take us back to barbarism. Books have their place in this life, but when it comes to the life to come, what can they offer? What solace can great authors, classic literature, or eloquent poets provide in times of suffering and affliction? In such times, human writings are powerless. As William Cowper so beautifully put it:

“What balm could wretches ever find
In wit, to heal affliction?
Or who can cure a troubled mind
With all the pomp of diction?”

This is where the Word of God stands out. When everything else fails, the Bible comes to our aid in every situation, so we can never sink too low for the promises of God to reach us. We will likely come to points where everything else crumbles, but the Word of God remains, steadfast and eternal. It is the Word of grace and truth that lifts us in our darkest moments, assuring us that God’s promises are still true, and urging us to call upon His faithfulness. Jesus himself said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

Even in circumstances that overwhelm us, where human reason falters and our strength fails, the Word of God steps in as our counselor, friend, and companion, offering support, guidance, and comfort. We should not be surprised, then, that throughout the ages, God’s people have held His Word in the highest regard. It’s written with such infinite wisdom that it addresses every situation, soothes every heartache, and provides a path through every trial, offering hope in every circumstance.
