his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. — 1 Cor 3:13 BSB
How careful and concerned we should be to secure two essential points in our hearts. First, we must be sure about the foundation. “Do I believe in the Son of God? Do I have clear understanding of His Sonship, Deity, and true humanity? Am I harboring any secret errors or holding onto any false doctrines? Is my creed sound? Do I receive the word of God as it has been revealed, and has it taken root in my believing heart?” Many are mistaken on this crucial foundation.
Then we must ask, “Am I truly standing on the foundation? Did God Himself place me there? Did I see the suitability of Christ for my lost and sinful soul? Did the Holy Spirit reveal the things of Christ to me in my time of need? Has the Son of God been made precious to me through faith? Am I looking to Him, clinging to Him, longing for Him, relying wholly on His person and work? How is my foundation—am I truly on it?”
The next important question is, “How is the superstructure of my faith? Has the Holy Spirit done a divine work in my soul? Is my faith truly of God? The hope I hold, does it come from the Lord to support me in the storms of life? Is my repentance genuine? Is my profession sincere? Is my walk consistent? Is my conscience tender? Are my desires spiritual? Are my prayers fervent? Is my heart honest before God? Am I right in the sight of God, with both my foundation and my spiritual life?”
If you can answer these questions with a sincere “Yes” before God, then you are right—you are on the foundation God has laid in Zion, and the Spirit has worked faith in your heart. But if you are not on God’s foundation, you are wrong. You are wrong for eternity unless the Holy Spirit has done His work in your conscience and brought you to Christ.
