The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in season. — Ps 145:15 BSB
The Lord will bring all His children, sooner or later, to “wait upon Him.” In every trouble they face, “the eyes of all wait upon You.” Whether they pass through temptations, difficulties in temporal matters, or spiritual conflicts, whether they endure hardships in providence or exercises in grace, the Lord brings all His children into this experience: “The eyes of all wait upon You.” They wait for deliverance, for a manifestation of His presence, for the light of His countenance to shine upon them. They wait for one soft word from His mouth, one smile from His approving face, one testimony of His everlasting favor.
Anyone who has never known what it means to “wait upon God” in this way—waiting by night and day as the Lord works in them—whether waiting in bed, behind a counter, in the fields, or in the crowded streets, lacks a crucial evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work. They lack the divine feature stamped upon every living child of God.
“And You give them their food in due season.” There is food they are waiting for, food that God alone provides. It is called “their food”—it belongs to them. God’s elect have provision stored up for them in Christ, for “it pleased the Father that in Him all fullness should dwell.” As the psalmist says, “I will abundantly bless her provision” (Psalm 132:15). Though none of God’s children would dare claim these blessings, they are eternally theirs in Christ. As Paul says, “all things are yours.”
It is “their food” because it belongs to them through Christ, and it is theirs in another sense—they are the only ones who hunger for it, who have a spiritual appetite and the capacity to digest it. Others feed on empty shadows, knowing nothing of the true, savory food of the gospel. As Jesus told His disciples, “I have food to eat which you do not know of.” His food was the hidden communion with His Father.
In the same way, the children of God hunger for the food found in Christ. God not only sets this food before their eyes but also kindles deep longings within their souls to be fed by it. His people cannot be satisfied with the empty husks of this world; they must have “food,” the savory food their souls love, which God Himself provides and gives as their soul-satisfying portion.
