The Young Ruler
As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up and knelt before Him. “Good Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” — Mark 10:17 BSB
This was a young man, full of energy and potential. He was rich, enjoying all the advantages and influence that wealth brings. He was respected, a ruler in the synagogue, with a character that was above reproach. He had kept all the commandments and lived a life that others admired. He was also a lovable person, and when Jesus saw him, He loved him. But despite all this, the young man was not content. His deep heart-hunger drove him to Christ, seeking something more.
There’s no more important question than the one he asked Jesus: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Eternal life is the most precious thing we can seek—it includes all the blessings of salvation in this life and a place in God’s family forever. It’s no wonder the young man ran to ask Jesus about it. The wonder is that so few people today show the same urgency in seeking it. People run after earthly treasures, but they’re slow to seek eternal life.
Eternal life is within reach of everyone, but it can’t be earned by simply doing things. There’s plenty of room for doing in the Christian life, but eternal life itself can’t be gained by good deeds—whether it’s praying, fasting, giving to charity, or any other religious act. Eternal life is the gift of God, available through Jesus Christ to all who will receive it. The way to eternal life is by accepting Christ as Savior and Lord.
