Household Duties
So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him. — John 12:2 BSB
There are certain Bible characters we never fail to recognize. We know Martha for her busy serving. Every time we see her, she’s engaged in active duties. She represents those whose love for Christ is expressed through practical service. Some people criticize Martha, but her kind of devotion is essential in a world where so much needs to be done. As beautiful as Mary’s contemplative spirit is, it wouldn’t work if everyone were like her. Who would do all the work that needs doing? Imagine a wife and mother who spends all her time in Bible-reading and prayer, neglecting her household duties—she wouldn’t create a very happy home.
Yes, Lord!—Yet some must serve;
Not all, with peaceful heart,
Can sit at your dear feet,
Wrapped in devotion sweet,
Set apart.
Yes, Lord!—Yet some must bear
The burden of the day,
Its labor and its heat,
While others at your feet
May sit and pray.
Yes, Lord!—Yet some must do
Life’s daily tasks,
Who long to sing must toil
Amid life’s dust and toil.
While lips are still.
Yes, Lord!—Yet man must earn,
And woman bake the bread;
And some must watch and wake
Early for others’ sake,
Who pray instead.
Yes, Lord!—Even you
Needed daily care.
I bring the bread and wine
To you, my Guest Divine!
This is my prayer.
