Pilate’s Indecision
“You take Him and judge Him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “We are not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews replied. — John 18:31 BSB
Pilate wanted to avoid the responsibility of deciding Jesus’ fate. Instead of firmly refusing to condemn an innocent man, Pilate tried to evade the issue and wash his hands of the matter. But no matter how he tried, Jesus kept coming back before him, and he couldn’t avoid making a decision.
Pilate’s question, “What shall I do with Jesus?” is one that everyone must answer. Jesus stands before every soul, as He did before Pilate, asking to be accepted or rejected. We may try to postpone the decision, but we cannot avoid it forever. We may try to send Jesus away, but sooner or later, He will return, standing at our door, waiting for our answer. Each of us must judge Christ and make a decision.
Look a little further into the story. Pilate sat on the judgment seat, and Jesus stood before him awaiting judgment. Pilate boasted, “Don’t you know I have the power to crucify you or release you?” What a terrible power to hold! The scene ended with Jesus being led away to be crucified. But soon after, Pilate’s fortunes fell. A few years later, he committed suicide. When he stood before the throne of God’s judgment, before whose eyes did Pilate have to look? What a reversal of roles! Once Pilate was the judge, and Jesus stood before him; now Pilate stands before Jesus as his judge.
Jesus stands before sinners now, meek and lowly, asking to be received. But the day is coming when the scene will be reversed. Those who reject Him now will find themselves standing before Him as their judge.
