Christ the Great Counsellor

So John called two of his disciples and sent them to ask the Lord, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?” — Luke 7:19 BSB

John the Baptist was struggling with certain concerns. He had questions that troubled him and sent a message to Christ to ask for clarification. This is exactly what each of us should do whenever we face perplexing issues or challenges in life—we should take them straight to Jesus. Even children have their disappointments and struggles, but they shouldn’t worry about them. Naturally, they can’t understand everything that happens in this vast world, but isn’t it comforting to know that Jesus understands it all? He knows what He is doing.

The best approach for us is to follow John’s example—whenever anything seems to go wrong, or we encounter situations we don’t understand, we should bring them to Jesus. This aligns with Paul’s teaching on how to avoid anxiety: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” If we follow this advice, we are promised that we won’t need to worry—the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds.

The key to this peace is learning not to hold onto our worries. It’s easy to bring our problems to Jesus, but the challenge is leaving them with Him. We often take our concerns to Him, only to pick them up again and carry them back with us. The true act of faith is to commit our troubles to Him without continuing to be anxious. This is how we find peace.
