Bread from Heaven
But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” — John 4:32 BSB
The disciples had left Jesus hungry when they went to buy food. But when they returned, they found that His hunger was gone, and He explained why. Jesus was deeply involved in His Father’s work, doing His will, and in that, He found complete satisfaction. The spiritual refreshment He received caused His physical hunger and weariness to disappear. His joy in saving a lost soul was so great that it overshadowed His physical needs. But this joy wasn’t His only source of nourishment; while He was doing His Father’s work, special grace from heaven was given to Him, which strengthened and sustained Him. He was fed with spiritual bread from heaven.
We see other examples of this. After Jesus had endured temptation and was hungry, angels came and ministered to Him. In Gethsemane, after His agony in prayer, an angel appeared and strengthened Him. Can we not believe that whenever Jesus had a special task that required extra strength, God provided spiritual refreshment to sustain Him?
We have a similar promise for our lives. When Paul asked for his trouble to be removed, the answer was, “No, my grace is sufficient for you; for my power is made perfect in weakness.” When we are connected to Christ, His strength flows into our weakness, His fullness fills our emptiness, and we receive all we need.
We see this in everyday life, especially in homes where caregivers are sustained through long, exhausting days and sleepless nights. It’s as if they are nourished by a supernatural source. They have a strength that others don’t understand. There’s a flow of strength from Christ’s fullness that meets their needs.
