Give Me to Drink
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” — John 4:7 BSB
This story shows us how full of Christ the everyday paths of life are. The woman in the story left her home for a simple, routine task—drawing water from a public well. But before she returned, she had met the Messiah, and He had revealed Himself to her as her Savior. She hadn’t been looking for Christ, though her heart’s longing for something more was a silent cry for Him. We never know when we might encounter Christ. He is present in all the ordinary moments of life, waiting for us. The woman met Him while she was doing a simple duty, and this is where we are most likely to find Him, too. No one ever found Christ on a path of disobedience.
This woman didn’t recognize the glory of the One standing beside her. Jesus appeared to her as a tired and dusty man, and He gently touched her heart before revealing His true identity. Christ often comes to us in unrecognizable ways, drawing us closer to Him before we fully realize who He is. Then, when the time is right, He shows us His face.
There’s another important detail in this story—Jesus began His conversation with the woman by asking for her help. He said, “Give me a drink.” In the same way, Jesus often stands before us in humble disguise, asking for a simple favor. He tells us that when the least of His followers come to us in need, asking for bread or help, it is really Him asking. We should be careful how we treat the lowliest among us because we never know when it is Christ Himself who is standing before us, asking for our help.
