Golden Grain
The farmer sows the word. — Mark 4:14 BSB
The human heart is naturally like soil that produces only thorns and briers. These grow without any effort or cultivation. We don’t need to be taught how to sin—wickedness grows naturally. But for good things to grow in our hearts, they must be planted and carefully nurtured. The seeds of righteousness come from heaven. The Bible’s words are divine seeds, carrying within them a wondrous power. Like natural seeds, they grow when planted in receptive hearts, producing plants of righteousness. By nature, our hearts are barren, or worse, filled with weeds and briers. But when the heavenly seed is received with faith and love, our lives are transformed, blossoming like a garden.
We can also be sowers of this good seed. It’s important to remember that we must sow the “Word.” No other seed will yield a harvest of spiritual life. God’s words carry life within them. “The words that I speak to you,” Jesus said, “they are spirit, and they are life.” If we plant these heavenly seeds in people’s hearts, we can expect to see fruit.
It is a sacred privilege to help in this holy work of sowing. We can carry the golden grains with us and drop them wherever we go. We do this by being filled with God’s Word, ready to speak it in every situation. We can also sow by sharing tracts, writing letters that communicate truth, or living lives so filled with love that we scatter seeds of righteousness through our actions. One day, when we stand before God, we will present Him with the golden sheaves we’ve gathered.
