The Wrath to Come

Then John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? — Luke 3:7 BSB

Many people want to escape God’s wrath, but they’re not willing to give up the sins that bring that wrath upon them. When a godless person becomes seriously ill and fears death, they often begin searching for a way to avoid judgment. They may call for a minister or a godly person. They’ll ask for their long-neglected Bible to be brought to their bedside, hoping it holds some power to protect them. They may ask for the Bible to be read to them or for the minister to pray, thinking that these things might save them. Some even request baptism or communion, hoping that these holy acts will shield them from God’s anger. All the while, they haven’t truly considered repenting of their sins. They don’t feel the weight of their guilt or recognize God’s holiness—they’re just terrified and trying to escape the consequences. If they recover, they often return to their old ways, proving their repentance wasn’t genuine. Their fear was of death and judgment, not a real sense of guilt or love for Christ.

John’s question to the multitudes seeking baptism was fitting: “Who warned you to flee?” The only escape that saves is fleeing from sin to Christ. No one can be saved if they cling to their sins while trying to escape judgment. The door to refuge is wide enough for the worst sinner, but it’s too narrow for anyone to bring along their cherished sins.
