Peacemakers
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. — Matt 5:9 BSB
This beatitude is often overlooked. Many people are strife-makers rather than peacemakers. They don’t seek to heal estrangements, prevent quarrels, or bring people together. In fact, their influence often widens divisions, intensifies bitterness, and stirs up anger and hatred. When they see even a small hint of suspicion or dislike, they fan the flames. Isn’t it time we took our Lord’s beatitude to heart and began to live it out in our lives? Isn’t it time we became peacemakers in a world torn apart by strife?
The spirit of peacemaking is divine. No one in heaven delights in separating friends. The more we allow the peacemaking spirit to shape our lives, the more we reflect the image of God. To be peacemakers, we must first strive to live peaceably with all people. As St. Paul said, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
But we are also called to promote peace between others. Our ministry is not limited to settling major disputes—we can also bring healing to the small quarrels and contentions we see around us. Whenever we find one person angry with another, we should try to remove the anger. We should work to heal the small rifts in friendships and turn unkind thoughts into kind ones. There is no more Christ-like service than promoting peace, preventing people from drifting apart, and encouraging them to live in greater love and harmony.
