He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things? — Rom 8:32 BSB
I’ve often thought about the way Solomon, as a type of Christ, generously gave to the queen of Sheba. The Bible tells us that he “gave her all she desired, whatever she asked, besides what he gave her from his royal bounty.” In the same way, our Royal Benefactor gives us more than we could ever ask for, and He gives freely, out of His royal abundance. Just as freely as the rain falls, as the sun shines, as the wind blows, and as the dew forms on the grass, so freely does God give His gifts to His people.
In giving Christ, God gave us everything. As the Apostle says, He “has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ.” We shouldn’t see these blessings as mere scraps of God’s love, scattered like crumbs from a table, but as treasures stored up in Christ, our covenant Head. All the blessings we receive are given out of Christ’s fullness, for it pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell in Him. By our union with Christ, we receive these blessings.
How can we even begin to comprehend the gift of God’s only Son, His eternal Son, given from His very heart to become human, to suffer, bleed, and die, offering a sacrifice acceptable to God, one that takes away the sins of His people forever?
The mystery of the incarnate God will be the source of eternal joy and admiration for the saints. The incarnation of the second Person of the Trinity, the eternal Son of the Father, taking on human nature will be a mystery that fills the hearts of God’s people with awe and delight for all eternity. This will be the theme of their endless praise and adoration.
