saying, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, then I will not bring on you any of the diseases I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.” — Exod 15:26 BSB
How does God heal the diseases of His people? He heals them primarily by subduing them, for in this life they are never fully healed. The promise is, “He will subdue our iniquities” (Micah 7:19). To subdue means to restrain their power. For instance, God sees one of His people struggling under the power of unbelief. He gives them faith, which subdues their unbelief. Another is weak and faint, near death from exhaustion—God gives them strength. Another mourns over their corruptions—He gives them a drop of His blood to cleanse their conscience and a taste of His love to warm their heart. Another is under fierce assault from Satan—one look from the Lord, and Satan flees, setting the soul free.
In His infinite wisdom, love, and power, God moves from one suffering soul to another, bringing healing wherever He goes. This blessed Physician has a remedy for every affliction, and His remedy is always perfectly suited to the need. It reaches the precise spot of the malady, healing it in the right way and at the right time. How good it is, then, to bring all our soul’s diseases before the Lord! Just as we would reveal every symptom to a trusted doctor, we should uncover our spiritual afflictions to the Lord, telling Him all our complaints and burdens, and waiting for Him to speak the word that will bring healing to every part of our soul.
