I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, — Prov 8:20 BSB
How does the Lord Jesus, speaking here as Wisdom, guide His people “in the way of righteousness?” He does it by shining a mysterious light into their souls, allowing them to see the truths revealed in God’s word. At the same time, He fills their hearts with a mysterious power, creating faith that grabs hold of and believes what God has revealed.
We can read God’s word endlessly without gaining anything, unless it becomes life and light to our souls. But when the Holy Spirit, whose work it is to take the things of Christ and reveal them to our hearts, sheds His light on the Scriptures that speak of Jesus as the One who fulfilled the law and brought about a glorious righteousness, something incredible happens. At that moment, faith is raised in our hearts, and we are able to receive, believe, and embrace what has been revealed. Through His gentle power, He leads us “in the way of righteousness.” And what an amazing way it is—that God would make His people righteous by giving them the righteousness of another! This will be the wonder and song of the saints throughout eternity. It will exhaust all our finite wisdom to grasp these secrets of divine love, wisdom, and power.
Even the angels, who are far wiser than us, long to look into these things. That’s why the seraphim were portrayed as gazing down at the golden mercy seat, symbolizing how the height, depth, length, and breadth of these mysteries are beyond even the understanding of the angels.
