But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. — 1 Cor 2:10 BSB

The Spirit of God, who dwells in a person, making their body His temple, searches the deep things of God. There is a heavenly treasure in these deep things that must be searched for and found. Sometimes, we see incredible depths in a single verse of Scripture when it is opened to our understanding or applied to our heart. What a depth there is in the blood of Christ—it cleanses from all sin, and if it cleanses from all sin, it must wash away millions of sins, even the foulest sins of the most wretched sinners. What depth there is in His dying love that stooped so low to raise us so high! What depth there is in His pity and compassion that reaches out to such guilty, vile transgressors as we are! What depth there is in God’s eternal counsels and unspeakable wisdom in designing such a plan—accomplished through the incarnation and death of His Son—where mercy and justice meet without conflict, every attribute of God is fully honored, and those deserving hell are lifted into heaven’s joy.

There are also deep things in our own hearts, not only depths of sin but depths of grace, for true religion has its own depths, which the Spirit searches and reveals. Faith, for instance, lies very deep, hidden in the heart—sometimes so hidden that it is almost, if not entirely, out of sight. The Spirit searches it out and brings it to light. The same with love—it takes root in the innermost recesses of our affections and needs to be searched out. Hope, too, is like an anchor at the bottom of the sea. The Spirit searches it out to show that it is sure and steadfast, entering behind the veil.
