He was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in the last times for your sake. — 1 Pet 1:20 BSB
“These last times” refer to this current age of grace in which we live, and they are called the last times for two main reasons:
-
Christ appeared during the final days of the old covenant, which was growing old and ready to disappear (Heb. 8:13). This was fully realized when Jerusalem was destroyed, and the temple services, including the sacrifices, ended.
-
Another reason we call this the “last days” is that this is the final revelation of God. It’s the “time of favor,” the “day of salvation,” which all the prophets spoke about (2 Cor. 6:2; Acts 3:24).
Right now, Christ is seated on the throne of grace. He is the only Mediator between God and humanity, interceding for us at the right hand of the Father. He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He lives forever to make intercession for us. But the day will come when He will leave the throne of grace to sit on the throne of judgment. Then these last days will close with the full salvation of His friends and the complete destruction of His enemies.
