They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will be radiant over the bounty of the LORD—the grain, new wine, and oil, and the young of the flocks and herds. Their life will be like a well-watered garden, and never again will they languish. — Jer 31:12 BSB
Until the redeemed experience the power of atoning blood and have their consciences cleansed from guilt and filth, they cannot come and sing in the height of Zion. But when they are redeemed from the hand of the one stronger than they, when the blood of Christ is applied to cleanse their consciences from guilt, when Christ is revealed and personally known, when the gospel becomes a word of power in the hands of the Spirit, and when they catch a glimpse of the King in His beauty, then, drawn by cords of love, they come to Zion, where the King sits in glory. Zion is called “the height” not only because it was physically high, but because the Lord of life and glory is exalted to the highest place of dignity and power. God promised, “Behold, my servant shall be exalted and lifted up and be very high” (Isaiah 52:13), and the Apostle says, “Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name” (Phil. 2:9), and again, “Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come” (Eph. 1:21).
Why do they come? To commune with Him, to worship Him in the beauty of holiness, to hear His words, feel His touch, and receive His love. When He speaks a word of peace, reveals Himself in His divine glory, and pours His love into their hearts, they sing. Then the promise is fulfilled, “They shall come and sing in the height of Zion.”
