Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. — Isa 45:22 BSB

Until we feel, deep within our souls, that we are at “the ends of the earth,” we cannot truly see, hear, or feel the glory of the Mediator who stands at the right hand of the Father. The more we feel our distance and our need, the more deeply we sense our need for him; and as the Spirit reveals the mystery of Christ’s person and his beauty, the more our souls are filled with admiration and adoration for him. O what a Mediator we have, held out to our faith in the Word of Truth! What a subject for our faith to grasp, our hope to anchor in, and our love to embrace! That the Son of God, who has been in the bosom of the Father for all eternity, equal with the Father and the Spirit in the glorious Trinity, would condescend to take on our human nature, to groan, suffer, bleed, and die for sinners who would ruin themselves a thousand times a day—what a wonder!

But we cannot truly grasp or feel the power of this mystery until we are brought to such a place of helplessness that only such a Savior can save us. Can we do anything to save ourselves? If so, we don’t need this mighty One on whom God has laid help, and we reject him in our hearts. Can we heal ourselves? If so, we don’t need the Good Physician. But when our eyes are opened to see our own utter ruin and helplessness, and when we behold the glorious person of the Son of God, faith is drawn to flee to him and rest upon him.
