For physical exercise is of limited value, but godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for the present life and for the one to come. — 1 Tim 4:8 BSB

What does it mean for something to be “profitable”? In simple terms, it’s whatever benefits the soul. And “godliness” is profitable in every way, benefiting the soul in all circumstances. It stands apart from anything worldly, unlike physical exercise, which offers only temporary gain. Godliness is useful in sickness and in health, in good times and bad, in both the highs and lows of life. It is drawn out and strengthened in the face of trials, growing stronger through opposition. It endures every storm and remains victorious even in defeat.

Godliness doesn’t fade away like physical strength or beauty. It isn’t like a fleeting blossom that withers quickly. It doesn’t abandon the soul when it’s most needed, as a fickle friend might. It is a faithful companion, alive in the darkest hours, steadfast even at the moment of death. It remains the life of the soul, the health of the heart, and a hope of glory in Christ Jesus. It is the work of God, sustained by His grace, leading to eternal happiness, and it is profitable in all things.
