A Shelter From The Tempest
Each will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in a dry land, like the shadow of a great rock in an arid land. — Isa 32:2 BSB
We are reminded that this prophecy was spoken during a time of great unrest. The clouds of war were darkening the horizon, and Israel was seeking help from human alliances. In the midst of this crisis, the prophet’s voice was heard, declaring, “Do not look to Egypt for help, but to God” (Isaiah 31:1). The kingdom’s stability depended on the righteousness of its king: “Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.” When all aspects of life—political, social, commercial, and domestic—are brought under the authority of Jesus Christ, the Kingdom of God will truly come, and His will shall be done on earth as it is in heaven. The Lord Jesus is sufficient to meet the diverse needs of all His people. Some need a refuge from life’s storms, others seek living water to quench their thirst, while still others long for the shelter of a great rock in a weary land. Christ is all of these and more. When a person submits to His rule, their eyes and ears are opened, their confession becomes bold, their judgment is purified, and their heart is filled with new generosity. First righteousness, then peace—this is heaven’s eternal order.
This chapter is remarkable! Notice the warning to the women of Jerusalem. A nation’s spiritual and political life is often shaped by its women, and no great revival can take place without their turning to God in repentance and faith, for they have a unique capacity for Him.
Are our conditions similar? Certainly! If even in Solomon’s time it was true that life was filled with toil and stress, how much more so today! The tides of life are turbulent, and there is little sense of security. Surely, we need the quiet resting places and secure dwellings where our souls can find peace! The promise is for “My people”—those who have heard and obeyed the voice of the Good Shepherd. If you count yourself among the weakest and humblest of His flock, this promise of peace is for you (Isaiah 32:18).
Prayer
Bring us, O Lord, through the stormy waters of life into a haven of peace. Hide us in Your pavilion from the strife of tongues and the fiery darts of the wicked one. May we be at peace with You, with ourselves, and with all others. Amen.
