The Christian Extra
and if someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. — Matt 5:41 BSB
Jesus here refers to the custom in the East, where royal messages were carried by relays of messengers, much like the fiery cross in the Scottish Highlands. These messengers were “press-men,” and each village was required to forward the message to the next. Whoever was found first was compelled to provide horses or mules for the journey.
In our lives, emergencies often arise unexpectedly. We begin the day with no anticipation of special demands, but suddenly we are called to go in an unplanned direction. We are compelled to go one mile. But then comes the question: having done your duty and what was required of you, what will you do about the second mile? The first mile was obligatory; the second is optional, and your response to this choice determines whether you have entered into the true spirit of Christ.
Let us not be stingy in our dealings with others. It is one thing to do what is required; it is quite another to go beyond the call of duty, doing it with a generous heart. It is not enough to pay employees; let us also show gratitude. It is not enough to pay our debts; let us also express appreciation. It is not enough to fulfill our work responsibilities; let us do it eagerly, even when it costs us. As followers of Christ, we are called to be stars shining in the darkness, flowers spreading fragrance, fountains bringing refreshment. As we give generously, our hands will be filled again, for with the measure we give, it shall be measured back to us (Luke 6:38).
Prayer
O God, help us to be more gracious to those around us. May we reach the full potential of what we can be, and be perfect in love, just as You, our Father, are perfect. Amen.
