Joy In The Hour Of Trial

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. — Jas 1:2-3 BSB

We are called to count our trials as pure joy, for patient endurance leads to the finished work of a holy character. All the trials and afflictions that beset us are seen and shared by our Heavenly Father. God did not save Israel from affliction but passed through it with them (Exodus 3:7-9; Isaiah 63:9). Evidently, there was a wise purpose in those bitter Egyptian experiences. So it is with us. There is a reason for our trials, even if we do not understand it now, but we will when we stand in the light of God. Afflictions are not always chastisement, though sometimes they may be; but more often, we face manifold trials so that our faith, which is more precious than gold, may result in praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Let us, therefore, rejoice and magnify His lovingkindness.

What a rich theme for praise! Sweet psalms and hymns have floated down the ages, bringing comfort to countless souls because those who wrote them passed through deep trials. And it may be that we who have passed through great tribulation will contribute unique notes to the heavenly music, notes that the unfallen sons of light could never sing. The psalms of eternity would be incomplete without the songs born from the furnace of pain.

Then we shall tell how God’s glorious arm led us, as it led Moses; how the stony paths became soft as moss; how He led us from scorching heat into green pastures and still waters, providing for us and making His Name glorious. We will recount how the Angel of His Presence saved us, how in love and pity He redeemed us, carried us, and bore us all our days. Yes, we will have a great story to tell! "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. None who trust in Him will be desolate."

Prayer

Grant me, O Lord, a steadfast heart, which no unworthy affection may drag downwards; give me an unconquered heart, which no trial can wear out; and give me an upright heart, which no temptation may turn aside. Amen.
