God Our Defence And Deliverer

Like birds hovering overhead, so the LORD of Hosts will protect Jerusalem. He will shield it and deliver it; He will pass over it and preserve it. — Isa 31:5 BSB

This chapter offers three beautiful descriptions of God. First, He is Wise (Isaiah 31:1-3). The politicians of the time boasted of their wisdom, believing their alliance with Egypt would save them. Yet their so-called wisdom was futile. Why didn’t they seek counsel from the Holy One of Israel? Did they believe His wisdom was only for spiritual matters and not for the practical affairs of life? God had the power to give men like Isaiah wisdom for earthly matters, but instead of seeking Him, the leaders turned away from His light and glory to pursue worldly strategies. Their boast of wisdom was hollow at a moment when they needed God’s guidance most. In every aspect of life, whether spiritual or practical, we should heed the words of James: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt” (James 1:5-6).

Second, God is like a Lion (Isaiah 31:4). The lion does not fear the shepherds who try to drive it away. It remains undeterred by their shouts and stands its ground. In the same way, God’s mighty presence and power protect those who trust in Him. No matter how many nations may gather to attack, they cannot prevail against the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. If you are fearful, take refuge in God, who is your fortress and defense (Psalm 46:1).

Third, God is like a mother bird protecting her nest (Isaiah 31:5). This image speaks to the tender care and closeness of God. He watches over us like a mother shielding her young. It reminds us of Jesus’ words as He longed to gather Jerusalem under His wings. No matter how chaotic or anxious life may seem, dare to believe in the Love that will never let you go!

O God, our Father, how can we thank You for Your Holy Word and the many ways You draw us to trust in You? Grant us grace to find rest under the shelter of Your wings! Amen.
