Today’s Verse

Habakkuk 3:17-18

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither [shall] fruit [be] in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and [there shall be] no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. (KJV)

(KJV)

Though the fig tree does not bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls, yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation! (BSB)

For though the fig tree doesn’t flourish, nor fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive fails, the fields yield no food; the flocks are cut off from the fold, and there is no herd in the stalls: yet I will rejoice in Yahweh. I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! (WEB)

When the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines; when the olive trees do not produce, and the fields yield no crops; when the sheep disappear from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls, I will rejoice because of the Lord; I will be happy because of the God who delivers me! Spurgeon’s Daily Help

The prophet Habakkuk sang a divine song in the night when he said, "Even if the fig tree doesn’t blossom, and there’s no fruit on the vines; even if the olive crop fails, and the fields produce no food; even if the flocks are cut off from the fold, and there’s no cattle in the stalls—yet I will rejoice

in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior." No one can make a song in the night on their own; they may try, but they’ll soon find that only God can inspire a song in the midst of affliction. O Great Musician, don’t let us remain silent just because we’re going through hard times—tune our lips to sing praises of thanksgiving.

The Spurgeon Birthday Book

December 11

All the comforts that come from this world are fleeting and short-lived; they are as bright and as temporary as the colors of a soap bubble. But the comforts that God gives His people never fade, and they never lose their freshness. They can withstand

any test—the trials of life, the fires of persecution, the passage of time; they can even endure death itself.
