When Jesus Christ came to build His temple, He didn’t find a mountain on which to build it; there was no mountain in our nature. He had to find a mountain in His own nature, and the mountain on which He has built His Church is the mountain of His own unchanging love, His own strong affection, His own

omnipotent grace, and His own infallible truth. This is the mountain on which the Church is built, and on this foundation, the great stones have been laid with oaths, promises, and blood to make them secure, even if the earth should shake and all creation fall apart.

Virtues without faith are just whitewashed sins. Unbelief ruins everything. It’s the fly in the ointment, the poison in the pot. Without faith, even with all the virtues of purity, all the kindness of philanthropy, all the sympathy of compassion, all

the talent of genius, and all the bravery of patriotism, a person has no claim to God’s acceptance; because “without faith it is impossible to please God.”
