April 19

He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone had a grievance to bring before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out and ask, “What city are you from?” And if he replied, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,” Absalom would say, “Look, your claims are good and right, but the king has no deputy to hear you.” — 2 Sam 15:2-3 BSB

Absalom twisted good qualities into tools for evil. For instance, getting up early is good if it’s to live a meaningful day. But Absalom woke early to carry out his treacherous plans.

Sympathy is a Christ-like quality. Offering comfort and support to those who are struggling is a noble act. But Absalom faked sympathy to win people’s trust so he could manipulate them in his plot to take his father’s throne. When anyone complained, Absalom pretended to care, suggesting things would be better if he were king.

This kind of deception is the worst kind of betrayal. We must be vigilant, ensuring that we don’t harm others by undermining their reputation or influence through subtle criticism.
