Looking up at His disciples, Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. — Luke 6:20 BSB
Christ came into the world to establish the kingdom of heaven on earth. The laws of this kingdom are the laws of heaven, and the Beatitudes contain the essence of these laws. We should study these ideals of character and strive to live them out in our daily lives.
Being “poor in spirit” means being humble and putting others before ourselves. It’s not about pretending to be humble—it must be genuine. Hunger of spirit refers to a dissatisfaction with our current state and a longing for something better. Sorrow, though painful, leads to comfort, which is one of God’s greatest gifts.
Being hated by others doesn’t seem desirable, but when it happens for the sake of Christ, it brings a blessing. Loving our enemies is difficult, but it is the Christ-like way. If we want to be like our Master, we must learn to love as He loves.
The key is to bring these teachings down from heaven and into our everyday lives.
