So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. — 2 Cor 4:18 BSB

How strong is the snare of visible things, and how necessary it is for God to keep us focused on the unseen! If Peter is to walk on the water, he must walk; if he is going to swim, he must swim—but he can’t do both. If a bird is going to fly, it must keep away from the ground and trust its wings. If it tries to stay close to the earth, it will not fly well.

God had to bring Abraham to the end of his own strength, allowing him to see that in his own body he could do nothing. Abraham had to reckon his body as good as dead and trust God entirely to fulfill His promises. When he looked away from himself and trusted only in God, he became fully convinced that God was able to do what He had promised.

This is the lesson God teaches us. He withholds encouraging results until we learn to trust Him without them. Then, when we trust Him fully, He delights in making His word real in both faith and fact.

Let us look only to Him today to do all things as He wills and in the way He chooses.
