But thanks be to God, who always leads us triumphantly as captives in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him. — 2 Cor 2:14 BSB

Every victor must first conquer themselves. The key to Joshua’s victory was Moses' uplifted arms on the mountain. When Moses held up his hands, Joshua prevailed; when he lowered them, Amalek prevailed. This battle was not one of human strength but one of faith, and the banner that flew over the defeated enemy was "Jehovah-nissi"—the Lord is my banner. This is the secret of our spiritual triumph as well. If we are led by the Spirit, we will not gratify the desires of the flesh. "Sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the law but under grace."

Have we begun the battle in this way, and in the strength of Christ, planted our feet on our own weaknesses? Once we are victorious over the enemy within our own hearts, we are liberated to fight the Lord’s battles and serve others. This lack of self-conquest was what hindered Saul's life and has wrecked many promising careers. One enemy in the heart is stronger than ten thousand in the field. May the Lord lead us all into Joshua’s first triumph and show us the secret of self-crucifixion through the greater Joshua, who alone can lead us to holiness and victory!
