And Noah waited seven more days and sent out the dove again, but this time she did not return to him. — Gen 8:12 BSB
First, we see the dove going forth from the ark, finding no rest in the chaotic and sin-filled waters of the flood. This can represent the period of the Old Testament, when the Holy Spirit visited a sinful world but found no lasting resting place and returned to the bosom of God.
Next, the dove goes out and returns with an olive leaf, the symbol of peace and reconciliation, showing that judgment had passed, and peace was coming. This may beautifully represent the next stage of the Holy Spirit’s work—proclaiming reconciliation through the ministry and death of Jesus Christ.
In the third stage, the dove goes forth from the ark and does not return. It makes the world its home and builds its nest among humanity. This represents the present work of the Holy Spirit, dwelling in our hearts and lives.
Let us welcome the Dove to make its home within us.
