But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” — Jas 4:6 BSB
One of the signs of true greatness is deep humility. A shallow person, aware of their own weaknesses and insufficiencies, often tries to promote themselves and ensure they are noticed. In contrast, someone with genuine strength is content to wait, allowing their work to speak for itself in due time. The most authentic individuals are so focused on their mission and purpose that they are unconcerned with recognition, being understood, or receiving a reward. Their only aim is to complete the task they’ve been given and fulfill their purpose in life.
One of the most powerful images we have of Jesus is found in the thirteenth chapter of John’s Gospel, where we read that Jesus, knowing He had come from God and was returning to God, rose from the supper and began to wash His disciples' feet. It was because He understood His high calling and destiny that He could lower Himself to the humblest of acts, and that act did not diminish His dignity.
May God grant us the divine mark of true heavenly status: a humble heart, a meek and lowly spirit.
