December 15

From the ends of the earth I call out to You whenever my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. — Ps 61:2 BSB

The end of self is the beginning of God. “When the tale of bricks is doubled, then comes Moses.” That’s the old Hebrew way of putting it. “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.” That’s the common expression of it. “When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” That’s how David expressed it. When we reach the end of our own strength, God steps in with His wisdom, love, and power.

When I faced great trouble, I always went to God and found He carried me through. But in the smaller trials, I often tried to handle them myself and failed. God wants us at our wit’s end so He can show His strength. How often we ask for His help but still count on human possibilities. Even God’s blessings can become a hindrance if we look to them instead of to Him.
