A Woman's War

“I will certainly go with you,” Deborah replied, “but the road you are taking will bring you no honor, because the LORD will be selling Sisera into the hand of a woman.” So Deborah got up and went with Barak to Kedesh, — Judg 4:9 BSB

This is quite an unusual verse, but there are people in the world with enough faith to embrace it. Barak, though called to battle, was hesitant to fight unless Deborah went with him, so the Lord decided to make it a woman’s victory. In doing so, He rebuked Barak’s reluctance, gained more glory for Himself, and brought greater shame upon Israel’s enemies.

The Lord can still use weak instruments. Why not me? He can work through people not usually called to great tasks. Why not you? The woman who defeated Israel’s enemy wasn’t a warrior but a housewife who stayed in her tent. She wasn’t an orator but a woman who milked cows and made butter. Couldn’t the Lord use any of us to fulfill His purpose? Perhaps today, someone will come to us, just as Sisera came to Jael’s tent. It’s our job not to destroy but to save. Let us welcome them with kindness and share the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. Who knows? Perhaps a hardened sinner will be transformed by the gospel today!
