God Repays

Kindness to the poor is a loan to the LORD, and He will repay the lender. — Prov 19:17 BSB

We should give to the poor out of pure compassion, not for recognition or influence, but from genuine sympathy. We shouldn’t expect anything in return, not even gratitude; rather, we should view our giving as a loan to the Lord Himself. When we give to those in need, it’s as though we’re lending to God, who takes on the obligation to repay. What an honor it is that the Lord chooses to “borrow” from us in this way! If we could put His name in our account books, wouldn’t it be a privilege worth noting? The next time a needy person crosses our path, let’s be generous, knowing that the Lord sees and will repay.

Though repayment may not be immediate or expected, the Lord’s promise to repay is more reliable than gold or silver. If we find ourselves short due to tough times, we can present this promise at the bank of faith, trusting in His provision. And if anyone has oppressed the poor, may the Lord forgive them and lead them to act justly and kindly.
