Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah. He came to Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? How have I sinned against your father, that he wants to take my life?” — 1 Sam 20:1 BSB
A true friend is a refuge. At some point, all of us will face trouble. For many years, we may go through life without major trials, but eventually, we will experience sorrow or danger. It could be like David’s experience, where people misjudge us or become enemies without cause, seeking to harm us. Or it might be sickness, loss, or grief. Whatever the trouble, a true friend is a great comfort during such times.
It is a blessing to have one friend whom we can rely on, even if all others fail us. We can go to them, as David went to Jonathan, and pour out our heart. Young people should seek an older friend to whom they can turn in times of trouble, someone whose faithful love will provide a safe refuge. There is strength in knowing that we have such a friend.
“There is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24) Christ is the best, truest, most faithful friend anyone can have. His friendship is a refuge indeed. We can turn to Him in any danger and find comfort, shelter, and blessing. No matter how many human friends we have, we all need Christ.
