“Do not be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” — 2 Kgs 6:16 BSB

It’s not enough to just put on a brave face and force ourselves to appear fearless. We can’t just pretend there’s no danger when we know full well there is. We can’t deceive ourselves. The true secret to confidence and fearlessness in danger is faith in God’s protection, not convincing ourselves that there is no threat. Jesus said, “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world” (John 16:33).

The great lesson for anyone seeking true courage is to grasp the reality of God’s care for His people in every danger. The ninetieth and one hundred and twenty-first Psalms describe this care: “The Lord is your keeper,” “The Lord will keep you from all evil,” and “He who keeps you will not slumber.” I have slept in a camp surrounded by armed enemies, yet I wasn’t afraid, because I knew watchful sentinels were standing guard. Likewise, we can feel safe in any danger, knowing that God watches over us at all times!
