And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. — 1 John 5:20 BSB
When the Lord Jesus is pleased to reveal Himself to our soul in some solemn moment, when He graciously removes the veil from our hearts so that we may behold His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, when He grants us a glimpse of Himself as the Son of God, the brightness of the Father’s glory and the express image of His Person, then we know that the Son of God has come.
How do you know the sun has risen in the morning? By the light that rises with it. In the same way, spiritually, how do you know that the Son of God has come? By the Sun of Righteousness rising upon you with healing in His wings, and by the light He shines into your heart. The Lord speaks to Zion, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” This is how darkness is dispersed, for He says, “Behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people, but the Lord shall rise upon you, and His glory shall be seen upon you.” Didn’t our Lord say, “I am come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me should not abide in darkness”? And didn’t He promise, “He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life”? Now, since God is light, when He shines into the soul, we walk in the light as He is in the light, and we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin. This is the best, surest, and safest way to know that the Son of God has come.
We also know that the Son of God has come through His presence, by His power working on our behalf, by the answers He gives to our prayers, and by how He appears in our darkest hours, making crooked things straight and rough places smooth. He reveals Himself to us as the Way, the Truth, and the Life, showing us that in Him there is rest and peace—solid, lasting happiness—and in no other. He draws our eyes to Himself, seated at the right hand of the Father in the fullness of His grace, glory, and majesty. Thus, we know that the Son of God has come. Every prayer, every petition, every sigh and cry, every longing look cast up to Him, every word of grace, every sweet promise, every glimpse or glance of the King in His beauty—all these are testimonies that the Son of God has come, and that you know He has come.
