The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He drives out the enemy before you, giving the command, ‘Destroy him!’ — Deut 33:27 BSB
Who is this eternal God? He is the great and glorious Jehovah, eternal in His Trinity of Persons and the unity of His Essence. What a depth of blessedness lies in the fact that God is eternal, with each Person of the Godhead sharing equally in this eternity. Consider the love of the eternal God—it is not a thing of time, not something that began when we were born, quickened, or brought to faith. It is an eternal love, for God declares, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn you.”
Likewise, the thoughts of God are eternal—thoughts of peace, mercy, and manifesting grace through His Son. These eternal thoughts were directed toward His chosen ones, with an eternal purpose that nothing can alter. God’s wisdom to devise, His power to accomplish, and His eternal purposes stand firm, unaffected by the waves of time.
Oh, this eternal God! We look back to eternity past and see who He was then, and we look forward to eternity future and see Him unchanging—resting in His love without any shadow of turning. We think of the spirits of just men made perfect, of our dear departed loved ones, who are now drinking from the eternal pleasures at God’s right hand. They will remain there forever, basking in the love of an eternal God, ever conformed to the image of His eternal Son, ever enjoying the eternal bliss of His presence.
What boundless gratitude is owed to the eternal Father for His love in giving His Son! What love and condescension we see in the eternal Son, who suffered and died for guilty sinners! And what wisdom and grace are revealed by the eternal Spirit, who takes the things of Christ, reveals them to the soul, and makes Christ known and precious. How wonderful it is that the eternal God, in His triune nature, is our refuge, now and forever!
