I will bless her with abundant provisions; I will satisfy her poor with bread. — Ps 132:15 BSB
What a sweetness there is in the word “satisfy!” The world cannot satisfy the child of God. Haven’t we all, at some point, tried to find satisfaction in the world, perhaps for many years? But can our spouse, children, family, or anything else in this world truly satisfy us? Can the pleasures of sin fill the emptiness we feel? Isn’t there always an aching void? Doesn’t everything outside of Christ lead to dissatisfaction and disappointment? The more we try to gain from the world, the more we find only sorrow, dissatisfaction, and vexation of spirit.
We look at the world, at all its distractions, relationships, and amusements, and find nothing but a harvest of sorrow and frustration. But when the Lord opens our eyes and shows us the bread of life, we find a satisfaction we never could gain from anywhere else. That’s why the Lord allows His people to experience such affliction. Some carry weak, suffering bodies, some face family troubles, others endure deep poverty, and still others are plagued with rebellious children or spiritual sorrows. All these trials serve to make them miserable outside of Christ and to drive them to seek satisfaction only in Him. The Lord wants His people to realize that He alone can fill the aching void in their souls and provide the comfort and peace they long for.
