But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. — 2 Pet 3:18 BSB
Growth is the unmistakable sign of life. We see this in plants, animals, and even in our own bodies. So too, where there is the life of God in the soul, there will be growth. Paul tells the Thessalonians, "We are always thankful for you, brothers, because your faith is growing more and more" (2 Thess. 1:3). Peter also exhorts, "Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." There is "an increasing knowledge of God" (Col. 1:10) and a growth toward maturity in Christ (Eph. 4:13). Paul's desire to know Christ more deeply drove him forward in his spiritual journey, pressing toward the goal of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:12-14).
This growth is not what some call "progressive sanctification," as though the sinful flesh becomes holier and holier. The flesh remains the "old man" corrupt with deceitful desires. But there is a growth of the "new man," created in righteousness and true holiness. We should strive for this growth in grace, seeking closer conformity to Christ. We should never be content with a low spiritual state but continually pray for greater knowledge of God's will and a life that pleases Him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God (Col. 1:9-10).
