O LORD of Hosts, how blessed is the man who trusts in You! — Ps 84:12 BSB

Trust in God requires complete self-renunciation. The moment I trust in myself, I stop trusting in God. As soon as I shift even a small part of my confidence away from God and place it in myself, I’ve taken all my trust away from Him. Trust in God must be total and absolute, or it isn’t real trust at all. Isn’t God worthy to be trusted? And if He is worthy of any trust, isn’t He worthy of all our trust? What kind of trust could a husband have in his wife if he trusted her with some keys but not with all? That wouldn’t be full confidence. So, if we trust God for one thing but not for everything, it shows we don’t truly trust Him. A man who doesn’t trust his wife with everything doesn’t truly trust her. In the same way, a person who doesn’t trust God with everything doesn’t truly trust Him.

True faith places everything in God’s hands, holding nothing back. It’s this hidden reserve that God despises because it’s hypocritical on its face. Either trust God for everything, or trust Him for nothing. God won’t accept a divided heart. Give Him all, or give Him none. Isn’t He worthy of full trust? Has He ever let you down when you truly placed your trust in Him? Doesn’t He ask, “Have I been a wilderness to Israel? Or a land of darkness? Why do my people say, ‘We are our own masters; we won’t come to You anymore’?” (Jeremiah 2:31).

David saw how rare it was for people to trust in God with all their heart. That’s what made him say, “Blessed is the man”—that special man, that rare person—“who trusts in You!” God’s blessing rests on that fortunate and highly favored individual. He is blessed both now and for eternity. He experiences God’s blessing in his soul even now. How rare it is for us to be in that sweet, blessed state where we can fully trust in God, trust Him for life and death, for everything—past, present, and future. Yet without a measure of this faith, there is no true peace, no lasting rest. Sooner or later, you will realize this, because you can’t carry your burdens without them breaking you. But when you can cast your burdens on the Lord, then you will surely find sweet relief.

Can’t we join David in saying with our hearts and voices, “O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in You”? Such a person will never be disappointed. The Lord will hear his prayer, bless his soul, be with him in life, support him in death, and bring him to be with Him in eternity.
